How Roofing Works
Re-roofing Projects Explained
Re-roofing your property with a durable, stylish long-run metal roof is one of the best investments you can make in your home or business. But many people aren’t sure what actually happens from the first quote through to handover. At Solution Roofing, we make the process simple and stress-free. Our clearly defined workflow puts the focus on safety, precision, clear communication, and exceptional craftsmanship, so you always know what to expect.

Our Process
Initial Quote & Consultation
We start with a free consultation to understand your goals. Using advanced technology and aerial photography, we assess your current roof and discuss colour options, steel grades, and profile types (corrugated, trapezoidal, tray, or Spanlok). You’ll receive a detailed, fixed-price quote outlining scope, timelines, and what’s included, with no surprises.
Site Inspection & Roof Measurement
Our team conducts a comprehensive roof inspection to take precise digital and manual measurements. We check ventilation and drainage, site access requirements and safety considerations. We also liaise with other trades, such as builders or painters, to coordinate schedules.
Custom-manufactured panels and flashings are then ordered to your exact specifications, ensuring the perfect fit and minimal waste.
Safety Planning & Site Preparation
Safety is our top priority. Before work begins, we install fall protection systems. We also set up staging areas for materials, tools, and waste, keeping the site tidy and organised while protecting your property.
Removal of Existing Roof
Once on site, we carefully strip the old roofing materials, whether it be old metal sheets or existing tiles & shingles. All work is completed section by section to maintain weather protection and minimise disruption. Old materials are safely managed and disposed of responsibly.
Substrate Inspection & Preparation
Once the roofing is stripped, we inspect the roof deck (substrate) for rot, mould, or moisture damage. Before any new roofing materials are laid, structural alignment and fastening integrity are checked. For tile-to-metal conversions, new purlins are installed to meet manufacturer specifications.
All Solution Roofing quotes include up to 10 lineal metres of timber replacement for damaged purlins that are not appropriate for re-use. Extensive damage uncovered during this inspection is documented and raised as a project variation for your approval.
Installation of Underlay and Protective Base Layers
Next, we install high-performance underlayments for waterproofing. Custom metal flashings are installed around valleys, chimneys, skylights, and edges, and ventilation products are used to enhance airflow and prevent condensation. These components form the critical moisture and air barrier under your new metal roof.
Metal Roof Sheet Installation
Your new roof sheets are expertly aligned and installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. Correct overlaps, fastener placement, and alignment ensure maximum resistance to wind and rain while delivering a uniform, professional finish.
Final Design Touches & Trimwork
The roof is finished with colour-matched ridge caps, barge flashings, fascia trims, and seals. We can also install optional extras such as skylight surrounds, solar panel mounts, or snow guards to suit your project. These finishing details give your roof its final polished look.
Final Quality Assurance & Clean-Up
Before handover, our team performs a detailed quality control check, including leak testing. We then carry out a full site clean-up, including a magnetic sweep to collect stray nails or metal fragments. The result is a spotless site and a roof that’s storm-ready.
Designing Your Ideal Roof
A great roof isn’t just about expert installation — it’s also about choosing the right design to suit your home, lifestyle, and environment. The profile, material, and colour you select all play a part in how your property looks and performs for decades to come. At Solution Roofing, we make this process simple by walking you through the options and giving you clear, expert advice, so you can feel confident your new roof will match both your vision and your budget.

FAQs
If you’re planning a re-roof or still exploring your options, it’s normal to have questions. Here are a few questions we’re often asked about the roofing process:
Can you re-roof over an existing tile roof?
Yes. We can remove your tile roof and install a lighter, more durable, long-run metal system. We’ll assess the framing and add purlins if required to meet structural and manufacturer guidelines.
How long does the roofing process take?
For most homes, the full re-roofing process, from removal to final finishing, takes about 3 to 7 days. Timing depends on weather, roof size, and site complexity.
What if damage is found under the old roof?
We include up to 10 metres of timber replacement in every quote. If we find more extensive damage, we’ll document it and provide a clear variation for your approval before proceeding.
Will my home be exposed to the weather during the re-roof?
No. We work in sections to ensure your property stays weather-tight throughout the process. Old roofing is removed and replaced in manageable stages, so your home is always protected against unexpected rain or wind.
How long will a new long-run metal roof last?
A professionally installed long-run steel roof can last 40–60 years or more with proper care. Modern coatings, concealed fixings, and high-quality steel mean today’s metal roofs are designed for long-term durability in New Zealand’s varied climate.
What’s included in your roofing warranty?
All our roofing systems are backed by a dual warranty: the manufacturer’s material warranty (covering the steel and coatings) and our workmanship warranty (covering installation quality). This gives you peace of mind that your roof is protected for decades.
How much does a re-roof cost in New Zealand?
The cost of re-roofing depends on the size of your roof, profile choice, colour selection, and site conditions. Corrugated and trapezoidal profiles are generally the most cost-effective, while tray and concealed-fix systems are premium options. We provide a fixed-price quote up front so you know exactly what to expect.
